Prerequisite Courses

CURRICULAR FLEXIBILITY & KEY PREREQUISITE COURSES 

Students at Lafayette may choose to pursue a broad education in civil engineering and other subjects or they may focus on structural, environmental, geotechnical, transportation, construction, or water resources engineering.  Because many of the required courses are prerequisites for more advanced electives, the specific interests of the student should be considered when planning the student’s four-year schedule.

For example:

• ES 230 Strength of Materials is the key prerequisite for structural and geotechnical courses.  It is recommended that students take ES 230 in 2nd Year-Fall.  However, students who do not intend to focus in structures or geotechnical may opt to take ES 230 in 2nd Year-Spring, instead.
• CE 251 Fluid Mechanics is a key prerequisite for many elective courses in environmental and water resources.  It is recommended that students take CE 251 in 2nd Year-Fall.  However, students who do not intend to focus in environmental or water resources may opt to take CE 251 in 3rd Year-Fall, instead.
